These plates are beautifully decorated reflecting the high-quality craftsmanship handed down for generations within Arita Porcelain Lab's long history. The technique displayed in this plate is called "somenishiki" where the bowl is first glazed with white and blue patterns and then is further decorated with detailed hand painted drawings.

The character in a circle on the plates is the character "kotobuki." This character is used on happy, auspicious occasions and is also used to express long life. The other detailed drawings such as the bamboos and Japanese plum trees are all auspicious patterns used in Japan. The gold lines on the plates create a rich, textured design like gold brocade and enhance the glossy shine of the smooth porcelain.

The uniquely square shaped plates can be a perfect part of a chic and modern table setting. They can be used as individual plates for serving a large salad or appetizers. It would be the perfect size for some sushi or tofu. White desserts such as a slice of classic cheesecake or panna cotta would be an excellent match for these decorative plates.

ABOUT ARITA WARE

Arita Ware, made in the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture, is the oldest porcelain production area in Japan's history. Arita porcelain is characterized by its translucent white porcelain surface, dyeing using "Gosu" (indigo pigment), and gorgeous red painting using glassy overglaze pigments (red, green, yellow, purple, and blue). The pottery is highly durable and is produced in a wide variety of styles, from fine art to daily necessities. It was exported to Europe, where it was prized as fine art and called "white gold".

Arita Ware is also a prestigious brand that is admired by ceramicists from other regions as a representative porcelain production area.
