This "uchiiwai (return/thank you gift)" set includes two-pairs of dark brown-lacquered wood chopsticks with glittery tops. They offer the classy sheen of traditional lacquerware coupled with a playful design. 

The longer pair is 22.5cm(8.8in) with a green and silver top whereas the shorter pair is 20.5cm(8.1in) with a top part of pink and silver. The chopsticks come in a simple paulownia wooden box, and are decorated with a Japanese "noshi (traditional Japanese gift ornament)" with uchiiwai written in Japanese characters. 

This chopstick set is made by Ishida, which has been making Wakasa lacquer for over 80 years. Wakasa lacquerware is a traditional craft of Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, and has been around since the early Edo period (1603-1867).

Although called the uchiiwai set, the chopsticks are suitable for various occasions. It's a charming pair that make for a one-of-a-kind gift!

ABOUT WAKASA LACQUER CHOPSTICKS

Wakasa lacquer chopsticks are traditional lacquered chopsticks from Obama City, Fukui Prefecture, with a history of about 400 years. It currently accounts for more than 80% of the national share of domestically produced lacquered chopsticks. Wakasa lacquer chopsticks was designated as a "traditional craft" on February 6, 1978 in recognition of its advanced techniques. It is characterized by their unique three-dimensional patterns created by applying layers of colored lacquer made of shells and eggshells. It was sometimes called "jewel lacquering" because of the noble shine of the patterns that represented the ocean floor.

Today, you can find a wide variety of Wakasa lacquer chopsticks, some handmade using traditional methods, some made using transfer sheets, and some made using dishwasher-safe paints. Enjoy choosing the chopsticks that best suit your lifestyle.

Gift of Chopsticks

This will be a gift to my son that commemorates our visit to Japan several years ago. He had a pair of chopsticks from that trip, but they were lost in a move, so these are a replacement. I appreciate the quality of this item and the care taken in the exterior wrapping!
