This beautiful flower shaped small plate is from the RYOUKA series of Usukiyaki. The sharply shaped lotus petals that has a dignified atmosphere, enhances the food as if it were a picture frame.

The versatile size is suitable for serving appetizers, side dishes, bread, cake, fruit, etc.

The lotus shape is inspired by the chrysanthemum plate, the origin of Usuki ware, and arranged in a modern way.
The area around Usuki City is known for its beautiful lotus flowers.

Usukiyaki is produced using a technique called "Katauchi" (molding). The sheet-shaped-clay is placed on a plaster mold, and is shaped with the fingers including each petal. This process gives the work a handmade feel that cannot be achieved through mass production, and gives it a stoneware-like appearance even though it is a porcelain piece.

RYOUKA Series
This series was inspired by dignified flowers such as lotus, cherry blossoms, and Kousa dogwood that bloom in the fields and mountains of Usuki in Oita, which is rich in nature.

Since all products are made by hand, there may be individual differences in shape and color.
We hope you will enjoy them as the warmth of handmade products.

USUKIYAKI

USUKIYAKI is the Japanese name for Usukiware, but it is also a project name. It suddenly disappeared from the world 200 years ago. However, in 2015, local potters revived this mysterious pottery.

The works, which are a fusion of traditional techniques and modern sensibilities, have a mysterious texture that reminds us of nostalgia in the midst of newness.

Its reputation in Japan and abroad is growing every day, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

Handcrafted plates using the “Katauchi” Method

Usuki ware has many white porcelain wreaths made by Shimabara potters. It is a beautiful design in which the food is placed in the middle of the flower.

To form the plates, they covered a plaster mold with a thin layer of base material and pressed it by hand to form a circle flower or petal, or used the Katauchi method, a molding technique that copies the pattern carved into the mold onto the bowl.

In this way, the warmth of hand-building remains, compared to casting, which involves pouring liquid pottery into a mold.

AbouT USUKI ware

Usuki ware is based on the concept that a vessel is a frame for serving food.

To bring out the beauty of the traditional food culture of Usuki, such as ingredients nurtured by the rich sea and mountains, organically grown crops, and the miso, soy sauce, and sake that have been used since ancient times, the pottery is created using natural shapes and materials as motifs.

They hope to bring this food culture, as well as the beauty of nature and the creative spirit of Usuki, to the tables of people around the world through their creations.

So beautiful!

These plates are beautiful, delicate and like a flower in their shape. I really like how they carry a Japanese feeling while still being very modern. I love them!

One of my favorites

This plate truly just takes your breath away. It is as stunning up-close as it is from a distance. Feels just as buttery smooth as the other Usuki pieces. Love it for lunch toast and dessert. Its a plate to pass down for generations for sure.
