This is a cast iron kettle made of Nambu ironware in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture in the Tohoku region. It is designed with a row of small protrusions called "Arare," which is a typical pattern of Nambu ironware. Handle can not be folded down.
It is said that the "Arare" pattern is an expression of a scene where hail falls.
The hazy landscape looks like a drizzle with smaller grains than rain. This is expressed by the fine dots. The dots are hand-applied to the mold one by one.
Nambu Ironware is made of pure iron of the highest quality, and water boiled in the kettle will contain iron that is good for your health, so it is recommended for people who want to take iron supplements naturally as well.
Also, taste of water boiled in a Nambu Ironware kettle will be milder, so you can enjoy Japanese tea at its best quality. We highly recommend the kettle when enjoying matcha or green tea.
After each use, just be sure to transfer or discard all remaining hot water inside of the kettle. There is no need to wash it with detergent, but if the kettle cools down with water in it, it can cause rusting. Then, take off the lid and dry with the residual heat of the kettle or over low heat.
Even if red rust occurs on the inside of a Nambu ironware kettle, it is not harmful to your health. You can use the kettle as is as long as the metallic smell does not bother you.
The charm of Nambu ironware is that it can be used for decades, sometimes for generations. Please use it in your daily life and enjoy the changes it undergoes over time.
*Important note regarding the difference in shading and red spots seen on Nambu ironware
During the production of an iron kettle, there is a process in which the entire kettle is fired in order to apply an oxide coating to prevent rust. At this time, depending on the condition of the fire and the unevenness of the temperature, a pattern may appear on the surface of the iron kettle. Red spots can also be seen, but these are thought to be the result of too high a temperature.
There is no problem in use, so please rest assured of its product quality.
