These chopsticks from Matsukan's Sound of the Sea series are half-coated, allowing the natural wood grain and color to be visible. Lightweight and easy to use, they feature a technique called raden, where shimmering mother-of-pearl is embedded into the lacquer coating. The chopstick rests are crafted in the form of a seashell-shaped rakugan, a traditional Japanese confection.

After an initial ten layers of natural lacquer, shell inlays are placed on the surface. Then, twenty more coats are applied for added shine and durability. Immaculately polished, the mother-of-pearl inlays reveal a gentle shine on red and a contrasting glimmer on black.

Presented in a paulownia box, the lid features elegant Japanese calligraphy displaying the characters "Sound of the Sea" alongside curved blue lines representing waves of the ocean. Whether chosen as a splendid self-gift or as an exquisite present for a special occasion, these chopsticks are certain to bring joy.

MATSUKAN SOUND OF THE SEA SERIES

The Sound of the Sea is a new series created by Matsukan, utilizing the traditional Wakasa lacquerware craft that has been passed down for approximately 400 years since the Edo period. The chopstick rest in this series is modeled after the seashell-shaped rakugan, a traditional Japanese confection from the long-established sweets shop Iseya in Obama. The mother-of-pearl emits a colorful and enchanting glow, and the seashell-shaped chopstick rest seems to produce the sound of the sea.
