Seikou Kiln Ginsai Kutani Kagami Mochi

Kagami mochi is a common sight in Japanese households as December 31st approaches. A good luck charm during the New Year holidays, it is placed at the family’s Shinto altar, in the kitchen, living room, or near the front door. It is said that the shape of the stacked mochi resembles a bronze mirror, which was a highly valuable household item in ancient Japan, hence the name kagami, or mirror.
Traditionally, kagami mochi is made with two rice cakes (or mochi) symbolizing the past year and the new year, and topped with a citrus fruit called daidai, which means “generations” and represents the passage of time. This Kutani ware version, being made of porcelain, can be set out year after year, serving as a beautiful symbol for the promise of a fresh new year.
The presence of kagami mochi is an offering to a Shinto god called Toshigami, who visits homes at the start of the new year. Display it in your home on or before December 28th for the most respectful offering to Toshigami, ensuring you’ll receive good luck in 2024. In early Taisho era, (about 100 years ago) Seikou Kiln opened its kiln in Nomi city of Ishikawa prefecture.
Seikou Kiln researched Japanese overglaze paint for Kutani for years. Finally, they achieved a high quality product with their printing paper. Transparency of glassy glaze and thick overglaze paint are as same quality as hand paint work.

Kutani ware is a type of pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture and it has a history of over 350 years.
It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue that are applied to the bold and daring lines.
Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
In the early 1700s, the Kutani kilns were closed, but about 80 years later they were opened and Kutani ware was revived.
The beauty of the various styles and methods of painting is known as "Japan Kutani" and is highly regarded around the world.

The item is carefully wrapped to prevent knocking from other parts. The colour and texture for the main body and the daidai look beautiful and matching. The daidai fits well with the main body.
