Featuring the distinctive nami-yu glaze, made from the ashes of the Kyoto forest, this Katakuchi Sake carafe embodies a natural clay color in creamy-white. The camellia design, a testament to Taniguchi's passion, enriches your sake drinking experience, turning it into a session of artistic appreciation.

Founded in 1868 as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in Kyoto, Tosen Kiln takes pride in its unique blend of soil and glaze, perpetuating the methods and exquisite quality of Nonomura Ninsei's works, the iconic potter who laid the foundation of Kyo ware in the 17th century.

Each camellia design is hand-painted by individual Japanese-style painters from Tosen Kiln. These artisans, with a profound background in Japanese style painting, offer more than mere decoration. They bring a subtle and soft color palette through underglaze painting, steering clear from over-accuracy, which can make items appear mundane. The camellia design has been passionately refined by Taniguchi over time. With leaves merging dark and light green shades, they beautifully balance the white and red dyed petals. These petals stand out with a unique, raised, and glossy finish, contrasting the watercolor-like backdrop of the leaves.

The carafe's handle, crafted from a branch, presents a harmonious contrast between the smooth stoneware and the rustic wood texture. Holding the carafe, one is immediately drawn to the elegance of the camellia design. The carafe, while light in hand, boasts a rim that's delicately accentuated by a handwritten line of gold. Furthermore, the base of the carafe is gently brushed with gold, amplifying the beauty of the camellia design. Every rotation of the carafe unveils the intricacy and grace of the design, making each pour a moment of artful experience.

ABOUT Kyo Ware and Kiyomizu Ware

"Emblematic Pottery Flourishes in the Old Capital of Japan"

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware is one of Kyoto's representative crafts. Its a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, named Kyo-yaki or Kiyomizu-yaki in Japanese.

There is no specific style, and all pottery techniques from various regions of Japan are used. Another characteristic of Kyo ware is that all processes, such as pottery wheel turning and painting, are done by hand. With a history that has developed along with traditional culture, Kyo ware is characterized by delicate painting and excellent modeling skills, resulting in ceramics of great elegance and highly pictorial qualities. Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware were designated as traditional crafts by the Japanese government in 1977 and are very popular for its artistic quality.
