Tosen Kiln Camellia Kiyomizu Ware Rectangle Plate 10 in

JPY ¥17,500

The surface of this plate radiates a milky luminance, courtesy of its glazed stoneware finish. The camellia design takes center stage, illustrating Taniguchi's artistic evolution. Beginning with a solitary camellia, the design has been meticulously refined to incorporate leaves that harmoniously blend dark and light green shades. The petals, treated with white and red dyes, exhibit a textured, glossy finish, offering a stunning contrast to the leaf's watercolor effect. This exquisite piece is crafted by painters with a deep allegiance to Japanese-style painting traditions. While this design traditionally graces the interiors of teacups, it finds a novel expression on this rectangular plate, infusing it with refined elegance.

The intricacy of painting directly on a bisqued cup challenges even the most skilled artisans. The rapid absorption of paint by the clay surface necessitates a level of precision and skill that only the finest artisans possess. Underglaze painting, with its restrained blue and brown palette, gifts this piece a muted allure. When fired under the glaze, the paint achieves a clear, translucent quality that highlights the precision of the underglaze technique, in stark contrast to the vividness of overglaze colors.

The underside of the plate is left unglazed, showcasing the raw texture of the clay in a rustic creamy-white hue. Its silhouette, with natural variances and soft ripples, speaks of the potter's intimate engagement with the material, evoking the thoughtful and skilled process behind this distinctive creation.

This plate, with its precise dimensions, offers an exceptional presentation for gourmet servings, from sushi and sashimi to tempura.

Tosen Kiln, established in 1868 as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in Kyoto, remains steadfast in its dedication to blending unique soil and glaze. This timeless technique preserves the esteemed methods and exceptional quality reminiscent of Nonomura Ninsei, the eminent potter credited for pioneering the art of Kyo ware in the 17th century.

Tosen Kiln encapsulates the enduring allure of Kiyomizu ware through intricate hand painting and refined modeling techniques. Every brushstroke on this stoneware resonates with warmth and beauty, narrating tales of dedication and unmatched craftsmanship.
