Tosen Kiln Tokusa Kiyomizu Ware Bowl

JPY ¥17,500

The meticulously adapted tokusa (horsetail) design, a masterpiece innovatively developed by craftsperson Taniguchi, adorns this bowl from Tosen Kiln. The tokusa pattern is vividly presented in two colors, imparting warmth and depth to the hand-drawn lines. These lines, initially penciled to ensure spacing, defy the impersonal touch of printing, thus infusing the bowl with a sense of artisanal charm. The artwork complements the creamy-white hue of Tosen Kiln's bisque, and intentional dents on the surface add uniqueness, breaking the monotony of a strictly round form. A single camellia flower in the center painted in white and red boast a distinct, raised, and glossy texture.

Established in 1868 as a prominent Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in Kyoto, Tosen Kiln remains loyal to its traditional roots. With a unique blend of soil and glaze, the kiln has upheld the methods and unmatched quality associated with Nonomura Ninsei, the esteemed potter recognized for perfecting the art of Kyo ware in the 17th century. The tokusa design showcases their unyielding dedication to the art of Japanese-style painting. Each tokusa pattern is hand-painted onto the bowl's bisque, a process demanding immense skill given the absorbent nature of the base. Once painted, the bowl receives a coat of the nami-yu glaze, enhancing its appearance with a transparent and radiant finish over the detailed artwork.

This bowl serves a dual purpose, being perfect as a serving bowl for daily meals and special occasions or for presenting Japanese confectioneries alongside traditional Japanese tea. Revel in the tokusa design both inside and out, allowing your tabletop to reflect the timeless elegance of Kyoto's artistry

There is no specific style, and all pottery techniques from various regions of Japan are used. Another characteristic of Kyo ware is that all processes, such as pottery wheel turning and painting, are done by hand. With a history that has developed along with traditional culture, Kyo ware is characterized by delicate painting and excellent modeling skills, resulting in ceramics of great elegance and highly pictorial qualities.
