Tosen Kiln Camellia Kiyomizu Ware Cafe au Lait Mug

JPY ¥22,500

This café au lait mug from Tosen Kiln is graced with an exquisitely detailed camellia design, a creation of Taniguchi's passion and expertise. The camellia, emblematic of grace and composure, echoes the deep-seated heritage of Japanese art. A juxtaposition of dark and light green leaves depicts perfect balance, while the petals—delicately shaded with white and red—boast a raised and glossy texture that stands out against the subtlety of the leaf patterns, reminiscent of watercolor techniques. Set upon the mug's creamy, yellow-tinged bisque, this design embodies the classic beauty for which Kyoto is renowned.

Founded in 1868, renowned as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in Kyoto, Tosen Kiln stands as a testament to tradition. By utilizing its distinctive blend of soil and glaze, the Kiln preserves the techniques and superior quality championed by Nonomura Ninsei, the illustrious potter credited with refining the art of Kyo ware in the 17th century.

The mesmerizing paintwork is the masterpiece of craftspeople deeply versed in Japanese-style painting. Their creativity and precision shine forth in every mug, exemplifying Tosen Kiln's commitment to excellence. The camellia motifs, delicately hand-painted on the mug's unglazed surface, demonstrate an unparalleled skill, especially considering the absorbent nature of the base material. Following the meticulous painting process, the mug is coated with the nami-yu glaze, bestowing a transparent and radiant sheen over the intricate designs.

With a capacity to hold a generous 300ml(9.5oz) of beverage, this mug is an ideal choice for café au lait or a fulfilling cup of tea. Its ergonomic design, featuring a wide handle and lightweight structure, ensures comfort. Every sip from this mug reveals the delicate camellia design, both on the inside and outside, making every beverage experience truly special.
