The image of graceful weeping sakura, cherry blossoms, of Gion, Kyoto is depicted on this Katakuchi sake carafe from Tosen Kiln. Weeping cherry blossoms are one of the representative flowers of Kyoto, and express Kyoto's unique atmosphere. The pink and pale green of the cherry blossoms beautifully decorate the yellowish cream white color of the Kiyomizu ware base. The rounded shape of the carafe gives an overall gentle impression and adds depth to the cherry blossoms. The handle is made of wood creating a contrast between the smoothness of stoneware and the rustic texture of wood.

Founded in 1868 as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in Kyoto, Tosen Kiln uses its own blend of soil and glaze, preserving the methods and quality of the works of Nonomura Ninsei, the renowned potter who is said to have established the art of Kyo ware in the 17th century.

The paintwork is done by craftpersons with in-depth knowledge of Japanese-style painting. The creativity and skillful techniques of these craftspersons are astoundingly displayed through the exquisite pieces made at Tosen Kiln. The cherry blossoms are hand-painted one by one on the unglazed surface of this carafe. Painting delicate colored designs on unglazed bases requires a tremendous amount of skill as the base material is highly absorbent. After each carafe is painted, a "nami-yu" glaze is applied and gives a clear and shiny coat over the detailed drawings.

This Katakuchi sake carafe can hold a generous 300ml (9.5 oz) of sake. It is a perfect item to serve sake on special occasions and to enjoy the elegant charm of cherry blossoms. Match this carafe with sake cups from the same Sakura series to adorn your tabletop with the stuning colors of spring in Kyoto.

"Emblematic Pottery Flourishes in the Old Capital of Japan"

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware is one of Kyoto's representative crafts. Its a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, named Kyo-yaki or Kiyomizu-yaki in Japanese.

There is no specific style, and all pottery techniques from various regions of Japan are used. Another characteristic of Kyo ware is that all processes, such as pottery wheel turning and painting, are done by hand. With a history that has developed along with traditional culture, Kyo ware is characterized by delicate painting and excellent modeling skills, resulting in ceramics of great elegance and highly pictorial qualities. Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware were designated as traditional crafts by the Japanese government in 1977 and are very popular for its artistic quality.
