Featuring the distinctive nami-yu glaze, derived from the ashes of the Kyoto forest, this teacup embodies a natural base color of cream white and is enhanced by the elegantly adapted tokusa (horsetail) design, craftsperson Taniguchi's innovative approach to traditional patterns. Established in 1868 as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in the heart of Kyoto, Tosen Kiln remains committed to its unique blend of soil and glaze, preserving the unparalleled quality and methods of Nonomura Ninsei, the legendary potter credited with pioneering Kyo ware in the 17th century.

In this rendition, the tokusa design comes to life through two different color combinations. One teacup features hand-drawn lines in red and blue which impart warmth and depth. While the other teacup showcases a blue-toned tokusa pattern, with its slender and uniform lines contrasting exquisitely against the creamy-white stoneware.

Initially penciled to ensure proper spacing, the lines offer a personal, artisanal touch that defies the impersonality of printing. This artistry complements the creamy-white hue of Tosen Kiln's bisque. Intentional dents on the bisque's surface add uniqueness, breaking away from a strictly round form and providing a tactile experience.

As you rotate the cup, the tokusa design unfolds, showcasing Taniguchi's skillful adaptation of the traditionally blue pattern. The hand-painted lines grace the exterior extending into the interior of the teacup, countering its white simplicity and revealing a a single camellia flower at the center. This meticulous direct painting on bisqued clay demands mastery rare among artisans. The paint, rapidly absorbed, results in a lucid, transparent finish that highlights the intricate tokusa pattern. The muted shades, a contrast to the bolder pigments of overglaze painting, create a subdued ambiance.

"Emblematic Pottery Flourishes in the Old Capital of Japan"

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware is one of Kyoto's representative crafts. Its a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, named Kyo-yaki or Kiyomizu-yaki in Japanese.

There is no specific style, and all pottery techniques from various regions of Japan are used. Another characteristic of Kyo ware is that all processes, such as pottery wheel turning and painting, are done by hand. With a history that has developed along with traditional culture, Kyo ware is characterized by delicate painting and excellent modeling skills, resulting in ceramics of great elegance and highly pictorial qualities. Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware were designated as traditional crafts by the Japanese government in 1977 and are very popular for its artistic quality.
