In this objet d’art, Alyne Ohigashi imaginatively draws inspiration from marine life and biology to create a fantastical porcelain sculpture. Inspired by the textures of dry coral, this piece also recalls the shape of a sand dollar or perhaps even the ridges of a cactus.

Every element of the texture is individually crafted and applied by hand, giving this piece an organic rhythm. Wonderfully tactile, it offers new ways of experiencing form and color. Each of her pieces is sculpted from Tobe porcelain—a challenge to work with for such detailed work. Drawing on marine and botanical shapes and hues familiar to her from a childhood spent in the Philippines, Ohigashi skillfully unifies her two homelands. The final result feels both nostalgic and new, familiar and strange, an intriguing ambiguity that encourages the viewer to create their own meaning.

La porcelaine de Tobe est produite dans la région de Tobe, dans la préfecture d'Ehime, au nord-ouest de l'île de Shikoku. Cette porcelaine blanche, avec sa belle teinte légèrement bleutée due à sa teneur en fer, demeure très prisée et appréciée. La porcelaine de Tobe conserve un profond respect pour les techniques artisanales traditionnelles, même en pleine modernisation.
