Ichimatsu 市松

Ichimatsu is a checkered pattern of alternating squares in two colors, also called ishidatami (paving stones). Because the squares continue without break, it symbolizes prosperity and continuity. The name comes from the Edo-period kabuki actor Sanogawa Ichimatsu, who wore the pattern.

In Edo Kiriko glassware, the ichimatsu pattern is hand-cut into the glass surface, with alternating colored and clear glass creating visual contrast. In lacquerware chopsticks, rectangular pieces of mother-of-pearl shell are precisely cut and carefully placed into multiple layers of lacquer coating to form the checkered design.
