Description

This work is designed to be enjoyed throughout the year, offering a sense of calm and fresh discovery each time it is viewed. Centered on the peony—long celebrated as the “king of flowers”—the composition brings together plum blossoms, nandina berries, bellflowers, and small chrysanthemums, each representing a different season. In nature, these plants never bloom at the same time, yet here they are depicted side by side, transcending the passage of time to create a richly balanced and harmonious scene.

The peony’s dignified presence, the plum that signals the close of winter, nandina as a symbol of fruition, the pure and upright bellflower, and the modestly blooming chrysanthemum each retain their distinct character. At the same time, they complement one another, forming a quiet dialogue across the surface of the painting. From the flowers emerges both a sense of living energy and a restrained, gentle elegance.

One of the work’s enduring appeals lies in its symbolic reading: flowers from different seasons are likened to encounters between people and to relationships that gradually take shape over time. The composition carries a wish for harmonious connections and meaningful bonds. By presenting a scene that cannot exist in the natural world, the piece exemplifies the unique expressive freedom of art, where time gives way to imagination and intention.

Rouleaux suspendus Kakejiku
