Description

This hanging scroll is a classic ink-wash sansui (landscape) painting. With layered mountain silhouettes, a flowing river, scattered trees, and rugged rocks, the composition uses subtle gradations of ink to suggest depth, texture, and atmosphere rather than literal detail.

This is more than a depiction of scenery. Each element carries philosophical meaning drawn from Daoist and Zen traditions: the mountains signify a retreat from worldly concerns into a distant, tranquil realm; the small hermitage tucked into the background marks the artist’s imagined refuge of the mind. Through deft control of light and dark washes, the work renders nature with both delicacy and force.

For full appreciation, let your eyes travel slowly from the foothills upward—experience the painting as a journey from the valley to the summit. That upward sweep reveals how space and stillness are composed to invite quiet reflection.

The artist, Shiokawa Suisho, was born in 1952 in Hyogo Prefecture, now based in Gifu. A Japanese painter known for landscapes and tigers, and has exhibited widely in group shows.

Rouleaux suspendus Kakejiku
