Description

This hanging scroll depicts nanten (nandina) and fukujuso (adonis) in a winter setting. In Japan, the changing seasons are cherished and expressed widely through the arts; here, a snowy landscape provides a quiet backdrop while the composition itself suggests the first whisper of spring.

Nandina has long been regarded as a talisman against illness and misfortune, traditionally used to ward off evil directions. Paired with the adonis, the motif takes on an auspicious meaning—transforming adversity into good fortune—so this scroll is suitable for display year-round rather than only in winter.

The flowers and foliage achieve their vivid presence through the use of eginu, a thin silk woven from silkworm thread. This fabric offers a taut surface and a subtle, delicate sheen that enhances color and detail. Discreet touches of gold leaf near the nandina and adonis catch the light, accentuating the palette and adding an elegant gleam.

The artist, Suzuki Yuri, born in 1968 in Gifu Prefecture, is celebrated for her delicate, contemplative style. Her work spans poetic depictions of birds and flowers, refined classical motifs, expressive portraits, and animal scenes. A member of the Bokusai-kai (Ink and Color Painting Association), she has received numerous accolades, including selection for the 5th Maeda Seisou Memorial Grand Prize. Her paintings have also been featured in the esteemed art journal Bijutsu Nenkan (Art Annual).

Rouleaux suspendus Kakejiku
