An ancient fruit that lives forever. This objet d’art by Alyne Ohigashi draws on her knowledge of botany and her imagination to create a fantastical botanical sculpture. Its texture is inspired by a tropical fruit; it might also be likened to the ridges of a cactus, crowned by a flower reaching for the sun—an intriguing ambiguity that rewards repeated viewing.

Sculpted out of Tobe porcelain—a challenging medium for such a detailed sculpture—every ridge is individually crafted and applied by hand, giving the piece a naturally organic rhythm. The warm yellow seems to embrace the sun, as additional layers flow organically, creating textures of their own. With a silky-smooth, glossy finish that contrasts with the deep angles of the surface, the piece creates a dappled interplay of light and shadow that invites viewing in all kinds of illumination.

Exploring new possibilities in Tobe ware, Ohigashi remains true to the materials of the craft while adding her own innovations. Drawing on botanical shapes and hues familiar to her from a childhood spent in the Philippines, Ohigashi skillfully unifies her two homelands. La porcelaine de Tobe est produite dans la région de Tobe, dans la préfecture d'Ehime, au nord-ouest de l'île de Shikoku. Cette porcelaine blanche, avec sa belle teinte légèrement bleutée due à sa teneur en fer, demeure très prisée et appréciée. La porcelaine de Tobe conserve un profond respect pour les techniques artisanales traditionnelles, même en pleine modernisation.
