Asanoha 麻の葉

麻 hemp · の possessive particle · 葉 leaf

Asanoha (hemp leaf) is a geometric pattern of six-pointed stars resembling the leaves of the hemp plant. Because hemp grows quickly and straight with little tending, the pattern carries wishes for children's healthy growth and was used on baby clothes as a protective, warding motif.

The pattern appears on ceramics, textiles, and paper goods as a repeating hexagonal motif. It is used in items given to children, as the hemp plant's rapid growth and strength symbolize wishes for good health and strong development.
