The Stillness Before Bloom

Nakada Hiroshi

In the world of Kutani ware, renowned for its vivid and intricate ornamentation, Nakada Hiroshi’s porcelain carves out a singular presence through an unwavering pursuit of white. Its quiet strength emerges not from color but from form itself—guided by a profound attunement to the rhythms and order of the natural world. Rooted in a Kutani tradition defined by its rigorous demand for perfection, Nakada has turned that same exacting spirit inward, stripping away decoration.

Breathing Silhouettes

Each of Nakada’s works draws the eye through silhouette alone. His vessels evoke the swelling of a flower bud at the very moment before it opens—that taut, suspended instant when life strains against its own boundaries. As he reflects, “I used to create many works with straight, linear structures, but over the years I found myself drawn to the organic lines and forms found in nature.” In his pieces, abundance and tension coexist, an energy held in reserve beneath a surface of restraint.

The Discipline of White

For Nakada, white is not merely an aesthetic choice—it is a philosophical one. “White conceals nothing,” he says. “It reveals the contour most clearly.” This demand for precision leaves no room for compromise, stripping away everything superfluous. This ethos finds its most complete expression in his signature technique, shinju kosai (pearlescent luminosity). A transparent glaze is first applied and fired; the glazed body is then subjected to sandblasting, creating microscopic abrasions that disperse light across the form. Rather than reflecting illumination directly, the surface emits a subdued, internal glow. The resulting texture shifts subtly between matte and luster, contingent upon light and vantage, reinforcing the work’s dynamism.
