Breeze Woven Vase

Inspired by the presence of traditional Japanese bamboo baskets, this flower vase by artist Takeoka Kensuke explores the possibilities of weaving with glass. Interlacing strands form an open lattice that appears both structured and fluid, allowing light and shadow to move freely through the surface. Rather than emphasizing transparency alone, the woven form introduces a sense of warmth rarely associated with glass, creating an object that feels at once airy and grounded.

The woven pattern begins as individual glass rods, some gently curved and others left straight, which are assembled into a lattice before taking shape as a vessel. Takeoka is particularly drawn to the way fabric settles when laid upon a surface, and this sensibility can be seen in the vase’s softly rounded contours. The final form was created by arranging the lattice atop a glass interior, then shaping it using blown glass techniques, allowing the weave to organically expand. The structure thus retains its woven rhythm while avoiding rigidity, allowing the form to feel as though it has naturally come to rest.

As daylight shifts, shadows gather within the layered glass lines and gradually dissolve again, revealing different aspects of the work throughout the day. The space between each strand is as important as the glass itself, creating a balance between presence and absence. Whether displayed with flowers or appreciated on its own, this vase brings a calm sense of stillness to its surroundings.

Takeoka Kensuke

Kensuke Takeoka was born in 1996 in Kanagawa Prefecture. He graduated from the Glass Program in the Craft Department at Tama Art University in 2019, then moved to Toyama to continue his studies at the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art.

He has received awards since 2018, most notably the Silver Prize at the International Glass Exhibition Kanazawa 2019 and First Place at the Glass Art Society Virtual 2021 Student Exhibition.
