Description

This hanging scroll features goldfish, a traditional symbol of summer in Japan. It depicts one goldfish with golden fins and two with white fins, all gracefully swimming across the surface of the water. Their elegant movements are softly rendered against a pale background, creating a composition that feels both refreshing and refined.

In Japanese culture, goldfish are symbols of good fortune, prosperity, and purity. Their graceful fins seem to dance across the water’s surface, enhanced by smooth, flowing brushwork that captures the illusion of movement.

The painting is done on eginu, a type of fine silk paper used in Japanese art. Its soft, lustrous sheen enhances the vivid colors of the goldfish and the gentle gradients of the water.

While especially suited for summer, this scroll also makes a charming year-round display, bringing quiet serenity and a touch of good fortune to any space.

The artist, Suzuki Yuri—born in 1958 in Gifu Prefecture—is known for her delicate and refined painting style. Her work spans flower-and-bird compositions, classical decorative motifs, portraits, and animal subjects. A member of the Bokusai-kai (Ink and Color Painting Association), she has received numerous accolades, including selection for the 5th Maeda Seisou Memorial Grand Prize. Her pieces are also featured in the renowned magazine Bijutsu Nenkan (Art Annual).

Rouleaux suspendus Kakejiku
