Description

This hanging scroll features a kingfisher, a motif traditionally linked to the summer season. The Japanese reverence for the changing seasons is deeply embedded in artistic expression, and this work beautifully captures the essence of summer through elegant brushwork.

The composition centers on a lone kingfisher resting silently on a wooden post, its gaze fixed on the water below. Celebrated for its striking plumage, the bird is known in Japanese as hisui, meaning jade, and is emblematic of summer’s vibrant energy.

Although small in size, the bird stands out with its bright blue head. Known for its sharp hunting skills, the kingfisher is often seen as a symbol of focus and success. Above, soft-toned maple leaves in blue and green arc gently across the upper canvas, adding a sense of coolness and visual depth to the composition.

Fujita Maho, born in 1976 in Aichi Prefecture, is a member of the Nippon Suibokuga Art Association. She specializes in portraits, animals, and flower-and-bird compositions, and has held numerous solo exhibitions. Her works are admired for their delicate brushwork and serene portrayals of nature.

Rouleaux suspendus Kakejiku
