Description

Experience authentic kintsugi at home with the Kintsugi MUSUBI Craft Kit. A MUSUBI KILN original, this kit was developed in collaboration with Matsumoto Kota, founder of Sinra and an expert in Kagawa Lacquerware and kintsugi. It contains the instructions and essentials you’ll need for your own journey into the craft.

Kintsugi is a vessel repair technique passed down in Japan for centuries. Rather than restoring the item to its original state, kintsugi turns breaks into beauty. It honors the passage of time and the memories shared between vessel and user. In kintsugi, cracks or chips are repaired using lacquer, then finished with artistic lines of lacquer or with metal powders. The vessel is thus reborn as a one-of-a-kind work of art that embraces its scars.

Among the items included in this kit are genuine lacquer (raw and bengara), an artist’s fine-detail brush from Kumano Prefecture, a high-quality gold-dusting brush crafted in Shiga Prefecture by renowned brush workshop Hankeido, genuine mawata silk floss, tonoko powder (a fine clay powder), and imitation gold powder made of lead-free brass—long used for its shine that is close to that of pure gold. See the Details section below for a full list of contents.

Kinkeshi gold powder is sold separately for practitioners who are interested in taking their art to a more advanced level.

Purchase of this kit provides a digital instruction pamphlet that illustrates each step with photos.

Disclaimer
  • When doing kintsugi, work in a well-lit room and ensure that you have ample workspace.
  • When working with lacquer, always wear nitrile or other disposable gloves and be very careful to avoid direct contact with your skin. Wearing long sleeves is recommended.
  • Raw lacquer may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. However, once fully cured, it is completely food-safe. Lacquer is one of the most durable natural materials available and is highly suited for environmentally friendly, long-lasting restoration of items such as ceramics.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings at all times. If lacquer comes into contact with your skin, immediately massage the affected area gently with a plant-based oil to dissolve the lacquer, then wash it off thoroughly with soap. If you notice any skin abnormalities, seek medical attention promptly.

MUSUBI KILN assumes no responsibility for any adverse reactions caused by lacquer.
