How to Care for Kakejiku

How to Care for Kakejiku

Ecrit par Team MUSUBI

Kakejiku, or Japanese hanging scroll, is a refined art form that quietly reflects the aesthetics of Japanese culture and the changing seasons. Crafted from delicate materials such as washi paper and silk, and designed to be rolled for storage, it requires careful handling. To preserve its beauty over time, thoughtful care is essential.

This article offers a detailed guide on how to properly roll and store kakejiku, helping to maintain it in good condition for years to come.

How to Store Kakejiku

1. With the scroll still hanging, roll it up in the reverse order of how it was hung, and remove it using a yahazu (forked bamboo stick). When storing, be sure to fold the decorative streamers fuutai inward on both sides. Attach wrapping paper on top of the scroll.

2. Hold the ends of the jikusaki (scroll rod ends) and gently roll the scroll upward. Avoid rolling it too tightly, as this may leave a curling crease that will make it difficult when rehanging.

3. As shown in the diagram, loosely wrap the makio (wrapping cord) three times over the hanging cord, starting from the right side without the makio overlapping.

4. Fold the center part of the remaining makio, which is hanging downward. Pass the folded part under the hanging cord and pull it upward.

5. Pull the looped section up again and then tuck it under the other side to tighten.

6. Store the scroll in a paulownia wood box. Inside the box, there is a cushion, and the side that accommodates the hasso (the upper crosspiece) is made wider. It’s important to handle it carefully when putting it away.

Storage Methods

Storage in a Paulownia Box

Paulownia wood is highly effective at repelling moisture and insects, making it an ideal material for storing hanging scrolls.

Storage in a Double Box

While storage in a paulownia box alone is sufficient, placing the paulownia box within a lacquered outer box further enhances its protection against humidity and pests.

Storage with a Thick Core

Using a thick paulownia core known as futomaki when rolling up the scroll results in a looser roll, which helps prevent creases and improves preservation.

Important Points for Kakejiku Care

It’s recommended to take the scroll out at least once a year to let it air and help maintain its condition.

To preserve the scroll’s quality, avoid leaving it displayed for too long—change it every two to three months.

When replacing or rehanging a scroll, choose a dry day with good weather and low humidity.

For Lasting Beauty and Preservation

If a scroll is left hanging for an extended period, it may lose its natural suppleness and become stiff while fully rolled out. Rolling it tightly in this state can create creases on the surface. Over time, these creases may deepen into cracks, diminishing the overall beauty of the artwork.

On the other hand, if a scroll is stored away for too long without being opened, residual moisture can lead to stains or insect damage. The brown, spot-like stains often found on older scrolls are typically caused by the oxidation of iron particles present in water, triggered by prolonged humidity.

Lastly

A kakejiku is more than just a decorative item—it is a cultural expression that captures the rhythm of the seasons and the spirit of Japan through the artwork it displays. Simply hanging one on the wall brings serenity and grace to a space, gently enriching everyday life with quiet beauty.

At the same time, a kakejiku is made from delicate materials, and even light humidity or repeated rolling can lead to unexpected damage. That’s why proper handling, careful storage, and regular rotation are essential.

To keep a cherished scroll in good condition for years to come, nothing is more important than everyday mindfulness and gentle care.
