Gold Auspicious Motifs Paneled Plant Pot

Prix de vente$2,216.00 USD

Description

Irregular geometric panels wrap around the rounded body of this plant pot by Kutani ware artist Ishikawa Ryusei, each presenting a different arrangement of colors and motifs. Drawing on the history of Kutani ware, Ishikawa combines established techniques in unexpected ways, creating a striking composition that rewards closer inspection.

The blue, green, and purple enamels draw on aote, a style of overglaze decoration originating in ko-Kutani that traditionally excludes red. Ishikawa departs from this palette by introducing red in selected sections. Broad areas of kinsai (gold decoration) develop a network of cracks during firing, adding an irregular texture to the carefully defined forms.

The Japanese character 福 (fuku), meaning “good fortune,” stands out in gold against a red ground. Elsewhere, sayagata, a continuous geometric pattern associated with longevity and prosperity, appears alongside plum blossoms and bamboo. Small fields of aochibu, tiny raised blue dots, introduce another decorative element among the richly colored sections.

Each panel brings a different visual rhythm, balancing the repetition of geometric forms with variations in color, texture, and decoration. The auspicious motifs also give the design a unifying theme, drawing on a traditional visual language of good fortune and longevity.
