How To Care for Stoneware

Ecrit par Team MUSUBI

Stoneware brings a sense of warmth to the table—soft in appearance, slightly textured to the touch, and shaped by the natural character of the clay itself. It carries a quiet depth that becomes more apparent with use.

To enjoy it fully, it helps to understand some simple aspects of its characteristics. Read on to learn more about the charm of Japanese stoneware and a few pointers to follow before and after use, so you can embrace its beauty and utility for years to come.

Understanding Stoneware

Stoneware has a distinct character shaped by the nature of clay. Compared to porcelain, it is more porous and can be more delicate depending on its design. Even when glazed, the surface contains countless microscopic openings, invisible to the eye. If gently tapped, it makes a softer, more muted sound.

At the same time, this material carries an earthiness that is unique to clay. Its grounded presence brings a sense of calm to the table. With use, stoneware often develops subtle changes in tone and expression—an aged beauty known as keinen bika that reflects the meals it has held and the time it has spent in daily life.

Before Use

Many stoneware pieces are treated during production to reduce water absorption, allowing them to be used from the start without any special preparation.

For some donabe clay pots, however, preparation may be required before first use. If applicable, this will be noted on the product page. Please refer to our guide How to Care for Your Donabe Clay Pot for more details.

Because of the nature of clay, some absorption may still occur after repeated use. It is difficult to completely prevent oils or natural colors from entering the surface.

If this is a concern, a simple step can help. Lightly rinse or briefly soak the piece in clean water before use. Allowing it to absorb moisture first can reduce the likelihood of staining.

How to Clean and Store

After use, it is best to wash stoneware as soon as possible to prevent oil stains, discoloration, and any lingering scents from settling into the surface.

Wash gently using a soft sponge and mild dish detergent. For areas with a rough or unglazed surface, such as the foot of the piece, a slightly firmer brush can be used if needed. Dishwashers may be used in some cases, but hand washing is recommended, especially for pieces with decorative finishes.

If stains or odors develop, soaking the piece in a solution of baking soda and water for several hours can help refresh it. After soaking, dry well to remove all the moisture. Avoid using strong bleach, as it may affect the surface.

Once washed, dry the piece thoroughly before storing. Even if the surface feels dry, moisture may remain within the material. Allow it to air dry completely before placing it in a cupboard. Storing stoneware while still damp may lead to mold or unwanted odors.

Tips for Daily Use

Here are a few more considerations to keep in mind when using stoneware.

- When stacking, take care with pieces that have unglazed or rough foot rings, as they may scratch other items.
- Like other pottery, pieces with gold or silver decoration should not be used in the microwave or oven.
- Thin vessels, such as teacups, may heat up quickly when filled with hot liquids—handle with care.
- Always check product details for specific care instructions when available.

Stoneware carries a gentle comfort, a sense of weight, and a softly textured surface that make it well suited for everyday use. Over time, its appearance gradually changes, and we hope you will come to enjoy these subtle shifts as part of its character.
