Fukami Sangyo
For the past 70 years, Fukami Sangyo has taken pride in offering only the highest quality of shuro palm cordage. And in line with their commitment to quality, Tominaga Hisako, an experienced craftsperson at Fukami Sangyo also is thorough in all the steps she takes to make their authentic shuro palm trivets. Tominaga is the only craftsperson at Fukami Sangyo who makes their shuro palm trivets. It only takes about 15-20 minutes for her to hand weave one trivet and on average, she weaves around 20 in a day.
Crafting trivets with uniform designs from shuro palm cordage requires the expertise and skill of an experienced craftsperson, due to its coarse and irregular texture. According to Tominaga, focusing on weaving the rope tightly and properly replicating the manufacturing steps are key factors she adheres to. To preserve its warm and authentic feel, nothing is overlooked. From start to finish, each piece receives meticulous consideration by Tominaga throughout its production process.

High-quality shuro palm cordage is soaked in water to soften the fibers of the shuro palm.

Each trivet is tightly handwoven around a wooden ring. After the weaving is completed, the trivets are hung to dry in the factory yard.
