Akae, or red overglaze painting, is a decorative technique that centers on red and is accented with hues such as green, purple, and blue, creating designs rich in depth and visual layering. The motifs most commonly feature floral patterns such as chrysanthemums, as well as flowing arabesque designs. At Zoho Kiln, vessels are decorated using an original akae pigment, red enamel meticulously ground over a long period of time, resulting in pieces of exceptional depth and refinement.

The camellia, a flower native to Japan and long regarded as a symbol of good fortune, blooms in rich, vivid colors from winter through early spring. Using a deeply nuanced original red pigment, Zoho Kiln depicts the camellia motif in the spirit of Kitaoji Rosanjin (1883–1959 CE)—the renowned Japanese ceramic artist and gourmet—capturing a balance of dignified purity and quiet elegance, enlivened by a subtle sense of grace and beauty.

Red kannyu is created by infusing fine crackle patterns known as kannyu—formed naturally during firing through subtle differences in shrinkage between the clay body and the glaze—with Zoho Kiln’s original red pigment. This rare red softens the overall tone of each piece, imparting a warm and soothing presence. As the pigment settles into every crevice of the kannyu, each vessel develops a unique and unpredictable expression, an incidental beauty that has long been admired as a distinctive “landscape” within the ceramic form.
