Sazameku Matcha Bowl

This matcha bowl features bold overglaze painting and reflects the refined artistry and delicate craftsmanship distinctive to Kutani ware. The silver sheen of the platinum glaze evokes the soft murmur of waves, while the glassy luster—characteristic of Kutani overglaze enamels—brings the surface to life with quiet radiance. Formed entirely by hand without the use of a pottery wheel, the bowl’s sculptural contours retain a rugged, natural texture reminiscent of rocky terrain. 

At the same time, the silky feel of the glaze and the delicate, lace-like wave patterns impart an organic softness. The gradation of white and green glazes appears to capture a fleeting moment—waves gently rising and falling across a tranquil sea. The overglaze decoration is composed of layered indigo blue, white, and platinum, applied in a carefully balanced sequence. These overlapping glazes conjure an image of the deep, silent ocean, rich in depth and touched by sunlight. 

One of the bowl’s most distinctive features is the yudare—the flowing glaze effect formed as the glaze drips and halts mid-flow during firing. This phenomenon, achievable only through precise control of temperature and glaze consistency, results in subtle, unrepeatable patterns that make each bowl truly unique.

As its name, sazameku (rippling) suggests, the spirit of waves flows through the entire piece. Yet interpretation is left open to the viewer. When held in the hand, it may call to mind the glittering surface of the sea or the gentle undulation of water in motion. Inverted, the bowl’s silhouette recalls alpine peaks rising against the sky, offering new perspectives with every angle.

Kutani-Ware ist eine Keramik, die in der Region Kaga der Präfektur Ishikawa hergestellt wird und auf eine über 350-jährige Geschichte zurückblickt.
