Glossary

Shinogi

Shinogi is a technique in which the surface of a vessel is carved into raised lines or ridges using a spatula or carving tool. The term originally refers to the ridge line running along the thickest part between the edge and blade of a sword.

The carved ridges catch and shift light depending on the viewing angle. The lines can be worked into rhythmic patterns or irregular planes, bringing movement to the form while emphasizing the substance of the clay.
