Ko-Kutani 古九谷

古 old · 九 nine · 谷 valley

Ko-Kutani (Old Kutani) refers to the colored porcelain produced at the Kutani village kiln from around 1655 in the early Edo period, regarded as the origin of Kutani ware. It has two styles: aode (the green style) and gosaide (the five-color style), using the Kutani palette of red, yellow, green, purple, and navy in bold, painterly compositions.

The geometric patterns and realistic paintings on ko-Kutani ware's surface create their own microcosms. Kutani ware uses a brush for painting with Japanese coloring paint, and the painted elements are slightly thickened and standing.
