yakishime 焼締

焼 firing · 締 tightening

Yakishime refers to unglazed wares fired at high temperature until the body becomes dense and water-resistant. Without glaze, the natural clay surface and ash from the kiln create distinctive textures during firing. It is represented by wares such as Bizen, where iron in the clay often reddens during the long firing.

The high-temperature firing produces varied surface effects depending on the firing process, including vivid contrasts of light brown and scarlet, and a subtly porous texture. In Bizen ware tumblers, this porous surface gives beer a richer, creamier head and enhances aromatic qualities.
