In this objet d’art, Alyne Ohigashi imaginatively combines natural forms to create a fantastical marine and botanical sculpture. Inspired by the textures of sea urchins and cactuses, it seems to be in a constant state of growth, revealing new details with every viewing.

Multiple layers of glazes in blue, green, turquoise, and navy flow and meld together, evoking a tide pool or a warm tropical sea. Touches of gold recall the sun shining on the water. Each small bump is made of water glass, each individually applied to give the piece a naturally organic rhythm. Wonderfully tactile, it offers new ways of experiencing form and color, revealing more of its secrets with every viewing.

Exploring new possibilities in Tobe ware, Ohigashi remains true to the materials of the craft while adding her own innovations. Each of her sculptures is crafted from Tobe porcelain—a challenge to work with for such detailed pieces. Drawing on marine and botanical shapes and hues familiar to her from a childhood spent in the Philippines, Ohigashi skillfully unifies her two homelands. The final result feels both nostalgic and new, familiar and strange, an intriguing ambiguity that encourages the viewer to create their own meaning.

Dann Ware

Tobe-Porzellan wird in der Region Tobe der Präfektur Ehime im Nordwesten der Insel Shikoku hergestellt. Das weiße Porzellan mit seinem schönen, leicht bläulichen Farbton, der durch den Eisengehalt entsteht, wird nach wie vor sehr geschätzt und geliebt. Tobe-Porzellan bewahrt auch inmitten der Modernisierung seinen hohen Respekt vor traditionellen Handwerkstechniken.
