Beschreibung

Hand-painted on silk, this hanging scroll depicts the Seven Lucky Gods gathered together against a warm cream background. Fine lines define their expressive faces and the folds of their robes, while soft shades of coral, rose, green, and gold keep the lively scene light.

Each deity is depicted with their familiar attribute. Ebisu, for example, holds a plump sea bream, a symbol of abundance, while the round-bellied Hotei rests against his cloth sack, said to contain endless good fortune.

Known as Shichifukujin in Japanese, these deities are one of the most celebrated subjects in Japanese auspicious painting. The group combines gods with roots in India, China, and Japan, and it became widely familiar through paintings and other works during the Edo period (1603–1868 CE).

Images of the seven gods were believed to bring blessings of all kinds, from good health and safety to success at work, love, and prosperity. Together, they express the wish for a home filled with happiness, shared with the people one holds dear.

The artist, Shibuya Chikugen, is a Gifu-based painter who specializes in nihonga, or traditional Japanese-style painting, and creates works for hanging scrolls. He is particularly known for his figure paintings and his depictions of flowers and birds.
