Beschreibung

A gently rounded square shape, this medium bowl features rustic patterns hand-painted with oniita, an iron-rich mineral pigment. After decoration, it is coated in Shino glaze and fired. Every single pattern is slightly different, exemplifying the wabi sabi beauty of handcrafting—no two bowls are alike. Its curved rim elegantly frames food, while its sturdy shape and textured surface provide a grounded presence.

Each bowl is made from mogusa clay and coated with Shino glaze, creating a subtle color unique to every piece. The Shino glaze, made from feldspar, naturally contracts during firing, creating a fine, crackled, and porous pattern known as kairagi—a "plum-blossom skin" texture cherished for its organic beauty. The warm orange clay body shows through where the glaze is thinner, especially toward the base, creating a pleasing color contrast. Over time, the bowl ages gracefully, developing more character with each use.

Serve simmered dishes or Japanese dressed salads for a refined and calm table setting. Its soft color palette complements any table setting, whether used alone or combined with other Shino pieces for a cohesive presentation. The elegant box also makes it a lovely gift option.

Shino

Shino ware is one of the most distinctive styles in Japanese pottery, first created in the Mino region of Gifu Prefecture in the late 16th to early 17th century. Known as the first Japanese ceramics to feature a white glaze, it embodies the refined beauty of wabi sabi.

Made from Mino’s mogusa clay and coated with a thick feldspar glaze, Shino pottery is admired for its rich white surface and the natural variations formed in the kiln. Subtle pinholes, flowing glaze, and warm reddish tones beneath the surface give each piece its own quiet expression.
