Gion Weeping Sakura Sakazuki Flat Sake Cup with Stand

This unique sakazuki flat sake cup with a stand displays the image of graceful weeping sakura, cherry blossoms, of Gion, Kyoto. Weeping cherry blossoms are one of the representative flowers of Kyoto, and express Kyoto's unique atmosphere. The pink and pale green of the cherry blossoms beautifully decorate the yellowish cream white color of the Kiyomizu ware base. 

The cherry blossoms are hand-painted one by one on the unglazed surface of the sake cup and stand. Painting delicate colored designs on unglazed bases requires a tremendous amount of skill, as the base material is highly absorbent. After each sake cup and stand is painted, a nami-yu glaze is applied and giving a clear and shiny coat over the detailed drawings.

Tosen-Ofen

Tosen Kiln wurde 1868 als Großhändler für Kiyomizu-Ware gegründet. 1944 eröffnete das Unternehmen ein Produktionsstudio in Mukomachi, einem Vorort von Kyoto, und begann damit die Produktion von Kiyomizu-Ware in großem Maßstab. Heute ist der Ofen in Gojo, Kyoto, in Betrieb und führt sein handwerkliches Erbe fort.

Tosen Kiln hat sich der Verfeinerung seiner Techniken und seines künstlerischen Feingefühls verschrieben und greift die traditionelle Handwerkskunst Kyotos auf, während es sie an die Moderne anpasst.
