The awaji knot is the most common knot used in mizuhiki, Japanese decorative cord made from twisted paper. It is also known as an abalone knot because of its resemblance to the shape of an abalone shell. The knot has three loops and a cross through the middle, with left and right loops tied together.
When both ends of the awaji knot are pulled, the knot becomes even stronger, meaning it tightens rather than loosens. Many mizuhiki designs are based on this fundamental knot.
