Iro-Nabeshima 色鍋島

色 color · 鍋島 Nabeshima

Iro-Nabeshima is a style of Nabeshima ware characterized by specific traditional rules for color application. It consists of the blue on white of sometsuke (underglaze blue) and the three colors for akae overglaze painting: red, yellow, and green. The outline is drawn in indigo blue gosu pigment, followed by overglaze painting in the prescribed colors.

The maker first draws the outline in indigo blue gosu pigment. After this underglaze work, overglaze painting is applied using the three akae colors of red, yellow, and green.
