In this vase, glass artist Otsuki Yosuke uses his signature multilayered glass technique to create a cinematic experience. Semi-transparent colored glass is layered vertically, so that the viewer experiences tones blending and changing with each new step as they walk past. From purple to blue and back again, the hues smoothly shift, revealing a beauty unique to glass.
Otsuki intentionally kept the shape of this vase simple to emphasize the fluid transition of colors. The frosted finish creates a soft impression, while the polished edges highlight light passing through the surface. Hollow pockets in the interior give the impression of air bubbles rising through water. One such bubble turns into the opening of the flower vase, suggesting the way the elements of water and air interact in nature, or how neither interior nor exterior can exist without the other.
Otsuki enfolds his own memories within this piece, connecting them with the universal workings of nature to express something subtly profound. Captivated by the ability of glass to persist for hundreds of years, this work embodies Otsuki’s desire to capture colors within glass so that they may remain undimmed forever.
A meditation on how memories are captured, this piece goes beyond its role as a vessel to invite moments of quiet participation in the piece and introspection.
