Muro 室
室 room / chamber
A muro is a humidity- and temperature-controlled curing chamber used to harden urushi lacquer. Because urushi hardens through enzymatic oxidation (driven by the laccase enzyme) rather than by drying, it needs a stable, humid, warm environment—typically around 70–80% relative humidity and 20–28°C, with some air exchange for oxygen. A muro provides these conditions and also shields the work from dust; it can be anything from a cardboard or plastic box to a built-in cabinet or a dedicated room.
