Taka maki-e is a raised maki-e technique in Japanese lacquerware. By the Kamakura period (1185–1333 CE), it had been perfected as one of the basic techniques of maki-e, alongside hira maki-e and togidashi maki-e. It is used to create layered, three-dimensional designs on lacquer surfaces.
Multiple maki-e methods, including taka maki-e, are applied to bring forth a three-dimensional landscape on lacquer objects. The technique requires exceptional skill and patience.
