Kinrande 金襴手

金 gold · 襴 brocade · 手 hand/style

Kinrande is porcelain decorated with gold patterns applied over the glaze, resembling gold brocade. The technique developed on the gold-decorated polychrome (gosai) porcelain of the Jingdezhen kilns in Ming-dynasty China and was used in Japan from the Edo period, seen in Imari and Kyo wares.

Gold is applied in thick painting over delicate brush strokes, creating accents against colored grounds. In Shoza style Kutani, gold is layered on top of detailed pictures painted in five colors to create what is called saisiki-kinrande—multicolored design with integrated gold.
