Matsuba Sakae founded his tatami shop in Yaizu City in 1977 after five years of intensive training at a well-established tatami shop in Shizuoka City. With a deep appreciation for the traditional comfort of tatami, a key aspect of Japanese culture, the company creates everyday goods and interior products using their tatami-making skills.
With deep roots in Japanese craftsmanship and tradition, Matsuba Tatami is committed to integrating the timeless appeal of igusa, or rush grass, into modern homes and lifestyles. Igusa is more than just a material—it provides a refreshing texture, a soothing natural aroma, and a vibrant green hue that gracefully changes over time. While 80% of the igusa used in tatami mats domestically is imported from China, Matsuba Tatami selects and sources its igusa from Japanese farmers in Kumamoto Prefecture. Igusa, the primary material in tatami mats, is cultivated in paddies much like rice and takes approximately one year and seven months to grow from seedling to harvest.
However, Japanese igusa farmers are facing challenges such as an aging workforce and a shortage of successors to carry on the craft. Matsuba Tatami is dedicated to supporting these farmers and preserving this invaluable tradition for future generations.
