Tobikanna
This is one of the techniques used to decorate the base. The raw ware is turned on a potter's wheel, and a plane- a flexible piece of metal - is lightly applied to it to create the engraved pattern. This technique requires a high level of skill, as the pattern is easily affected by the tool, the moisture content of the clay, and the speed at which the wheel is turned.
