Musashi Kiln
Specializing in the creation of Mino ware, Tsujii Musashi established Musashi Kiln in 2006 in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture. While crafting his unique pottery, he also engages in agricultural activities, drawing inspiration for his designs from nature. Elements such as wheat and aquatic plants are incorporated into his patterns. The tableware he creates offers a natural and comfortable sensation, both in its appearance and its texture.
Behind the designs
The aquatic plant motif is a hallmark of Yashichida Oribe ware, created by Yashichida Kiln, which was active primarily during the Kanei era (1624–1644 CE). Characterized by green glaze and abstract brushwork, this design expresses not only the color but also the graceful movement of water plants swaying in the current. The use of natural green glaze and flowing brushstrokes evokes the elegance and gentle rhythm of aquatic life, bringing a sense of vitality and calm to each piece.

The wheat motif adds a rustic charm to Tsujii Musashi’s work and stems from his own farming experiences. He sees wheat as a plant full of quiet beauty and character, and his time spent in the fields inspired him to incorporate its simple elegance into his pottery. This motif reflects his deep connection to nature and brings a warm, authentic touch to his creations.

The camellia motif, a traditional design passed down through generations, is reinterpreted by Tsujii Musashi with a distinctive and gentle touch. Instead of rendering each petal in detail, he uses soft, rounded brushstrokes to capture the essence of the camellia’s form. This approach emphasizes the flower’s natural charm and quiet beauty, lending an endearing and genuine quality to the design.
