Set atop an elegant wooden platform and red felt, the lucky pair of crane and turtle will bring luck and long life. Crafted with the Kutani ware technique, the vibrant colors and delicate raised texture on these auspicious animals add elegance to any space.

The pairing of a crane and a turtle is commonly seen in traditional Japanese art. One of the legendary tales says that the turtle saved the crane from drowning, and many years later, the crane returned the act by saving the turtle from a terrible drought. In addition, both are believed to be omens for longevity — according to an old Japanese proverb, the crane lives 1,000 years while the turtle lives 10,000.

The crane is sitting solemnly, its feathers at rest to provide a calming presence. The blaze of ruby red on top of its head stands out against the black and white body.

Next to it, the turtle gazes upwards to the sky, summoning the spirits to provide protection. Deep green across the shell is contrasted by stunning gold borders, and a long tail of algae at the back. This flowing tail further symbolizes longevity, as it is said this tail only appears once a turtle reaches 500 years of age. The length of the tail suggests this turtle is much older, meaning it is a "Minogame" — a divine turtle that has lived at least 1,000 years.

The crane and turtle are both made using the Kutani ware style of “mori-e”. Growing in popularity since the Meiji Era, this technique involves applying thick stripes of paint in order to create a 3-D effect. The unique texture adds a striking pattern to the exterior of the figurine, bringing it to life.

Place this divine pair in your home for a striking piece that will not only delight the visual senses, but also bring you and your family a long, luxurious life.

About kutani ware

Kutani ware is a type of pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture and it has a history of over 350 years.
It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue that are applied to the bold and daring lines.
Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition.
In the early 1700s, the Kutani kilns were closed, but about 80 years later they were opened and Kutani ware was revived.
The beauty of the various styles and methods of painting is known as "Japan Kutani" and is highly regarded around the world.
