This set of five small plates showcase Mt. Fuji in all its beauty across the different changing seasons. Adorned with traditional Japanese symbols that are known to bring good fortune, they offer a stunning display of nature and culture.

The five different hues of Mt. Fuji and its auspicious accompaniments decorate the yellowish cream white color of the Kiyomizu ware base. The yellow Mt. Fuji with the pine tree, the gray with the bamboo and the pink with the plum flowers represent a grouping of plants of good fortune in Japan. Cranes which symbolize longevity are seen flying across a blue Mt. Fuji. And an auspicious red sun is depicted rising from the side of a matcha-green Mt. Fuji.

Founded in 1868 as a Kiyomizu ware wholesaler in Kyoto, Tosen Kiln uses its own blend of soil and glaze, preserving the methods and quality of the works of Nonomura Ninsei, the renowned potter who is said to have established the art of Kyo ware in the 17th century.

The paintwork is done by craftpersons with in-depth knowledge of Japanese-style painting. The creativity and skillful techniques of these craftspersons are astoundingly displayed through the exquisite pieces made at Tosen Kiln. Mt. Fuji and other auspicious designs are hand-painted one by one on the unglazed surface of the sauce plates. Painting delicate colored designs on a unglazed base requires a tremendous amount of skill as the base material is highly absorbent. After each sauce plate is painted, a "nami-yu" glaze is applied and gives the mug a clear and shiny coat over the detailed drawings.

This set is accompanied by a wooden stand to display the sauce plate on a table or shelf. Vary the design of the plate depending on the time of year or the occasion. These delightful small plates can be used to bring a bit of Japanese flavor to your dining experience.

This set comes in an attractive paulownia box. The lid is decorated with a hand-painted image of a majestic Mt. Fuji behind strong big waves against a full red sun. The sides of the box are decorated with paintings of pine branches, bamboo leaves, plum flowers, and cranes. On the backside of the lid, the Japanese characters for "plate" is written in the middle. On the left is the name of Tosen Kiln. It is sure to make any special gift-giving occasion even more memorable.

"Emblematic Pottery Flourishes in the Old Capital of Japan"

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware is one of Kyoto's representative crafts. Its a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, named Kyo-yaki or Kiyomizu-yaki in Japanese.

There is no specific style, and all pottery techniques from various regions of Japan are used. Another characteristic of Kyo ware is that all processes, such as pottery wheel turning and painting, are done by hand. With a history that has developed along with traditional culture, Kyo ware is characterized by delicate painting and excellent modeling skills, resulting in ceramics of great elegance and highly pictorial qualities. Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware were designated as traditional crafts by the Japanese government in 1977 and are very popular for its artistic quality.
