Edo Kimekomi dolls, which are said to have originated in Kyoto in the 18th century, have a unique Japanese technique of carving grooves into the prototype of the body and tacking the end of fabrics into the grooves as they are dressed in costumes. It is beautifully finished at every border of every part. The ability to arrange the fabric so precisely is the work of a skilled craftsman.

Dolls made with the kimekomi technique have a very sturdy body base. They do not roll or fall over when touched. They are highly stable and stands firmly on its own.

Today, they are still made by hand in the traditional way, and are designated as a traditional craft by the national government.
