Tanaka Toubou Plum Blossom and Japanese Nightingale Kyo Ware Matcha Bowl Chawan

JPY ¥17,500

Only 5 pieces in stock!

A beautiful Kyo ware matcha bowl chawan adorned with the traditional combination of plum blossoms and a Japanese nightingale.

Springtime is heralded by a beautiful juxtaposition of the delicate red and white of the plum blossoms with the matcha-green hue of a Japanese nightingale on light beige stoneware. This combination has been celebrated since way back in the Manyo period (c. 710-794) and can even be seen depicted on traditional Japanese playing cards.
The combination of these two motifs is an exquisite representation of spring as they come together to mark its arrival.

The designs are hand painted by an artisan at Tanaka Toubou one by one which is a characteristic of Kyo ware. The plum blossoms are elegantly drawn in a light red and a vivid white which is painted with a stronger touch. A lovely Japanese nightingale is seen chirping on the artful plum blossom branch.

At the foot of "Fushimi Inari Taisha" Shrine, Tanaka Toubou has been open for 35 years. The artisans at Tanaka Toubou, Nobuo and Michiko Tanaka specialize in creating unique tea ceremony utensils and daily-use tablewares.

Nobuo principally creates glazed ware with a black "tenmoku" glaze that includes at least five percent iron. Meanwhile, Michiko's works capture the essence of each season along with gentle depictions of plants and animals which give an emotional connection to those who admire them.

ABOUT Kyo Ware and Kiyomizu Ware

"Emblematic Pottery Flourishes in the Old Capital of Japan"

Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware is one of Kyoto's representative crafts. Its a traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, named Kyo-yaki or Kiyomizu-yaki in Japanese.

There is no specific style, and all pottery techniques from various regions of Japan are used. Another characteristic of Kyo ware is that all processes, such as pottery wheel turning and painting, are done by hand. With a history that has developed along with traditional culture, Kyo ware is characterized by delicate painting and excellent modeling skills, resulting in ceramics of great elegance and highly pictorial qualities. Kyo ware and Kiyomizu ware were designated as traditional crafts by the Japanese government in 1977 and are very popular for its artistic quality.

Beautiful matcha bowl

I just received this matcha bowl, so have not yet had a chance to use it - but it arrived quickly (considering it was shipped from Japan to USA), very safely packaged with no damage, and is absolutely beautiful to see in person. Thank you Tanaka Toubou craftsmen for your lovely handiwork! (I also bought the Hinamatsuri bowl)

Matcha bowls

This is one of four matcha bowls I bought in different patterns to decorate my newly redecorated kitchen. Each one is more beautiful than the next. They came safely and beautifully packaged.
